It was March 2020. On hearing the news of a looming lockdown, I responded with, ‘I need a studio.’ So, in a matter of hours, our car was parked in the street and the garage was transformed into a working art space. I believe that this series of work is my response to the pandemic. The series commenced while I was in lockdown and continued to grow as we navigated a ‘new’ world. The works are abstract interpretations of my lockdown and pandemic journey, from the experience of fear and confusion, to finding peace and gratitude in the everyday. Although the pandemic has brought many challenges and heartache across the globe, I have witnessed many beautiful outcomes, from long overdue change of careers, people finding their passions and purpose; but most of all, I’ve heard of so many stories of people finding simplicity and appreciation for the small things, like spending time with loved ones or taking a walk in the park. As for myself; I slowed down enough to reconnect with my passion of painting again. This is why the name for this series is ‘covid’ spelt backwards. To remind us of the blessings and power behind this life event.
